MESA Program

The MESA community-college programs (a partnership between MESA and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO)) focus on transferring talented students to four-year institutions. Community-college MESAs support students through program-specific core classes and workshops, STEM orientations, academic tutoring and career counseling, industry partnerships and professional mentorships, and student centers. Programming focuses on collaboration among students and involves collaborations between MESA programs and other academic and industry partners, which made MESA a natural fit for a collaboration with California Connects.

MESA students who participated in California Connects were given a laptop with software and six months of free wireless broadband access and the opportunity to take Microsoft’s online IT Academy software course and receive certification in using Microsoft software. In exchange, laptop recipients served their communities by training family and community members how to use computers and the Internet. They were also expected to do community outreach to encourage computer and Internet use among those in their environment. In particular, students were expected to encourage their trainees and other members of their communities to subscribe to broadband Internet service.
